31. Infanterie-Division 1914-1918
At the outbreak of war, the 31st Infantry Division formed part of the 21st Army Corps together with the 42nd Infantry Division.
Following fighting in Lorraine in late 1914, the 31st Division was transferred to the Eastern Front in late January 1915, where it fought in the battle for the Masurian lakes. The division remained on the Eastern Front until the ceasefire in December 1917, when it returned to the west for a period of training before it went to Flanders in January 1918. After a lengthy period of arduous service on the Ypres front, the division was withdrawn to a quiet sector on the Woevre. The division was resting in the St. Mihiel sector when the Americans launched their attack on the salient in September 1918. The division was involved in fighting retreats between the Aire and Maas before crossing the Maas and returning to Germany in early December 1918.
The allied 1917 intelligence estimate, based on information gathered by the French and British, rated the division as mediocre. The division was rated as third class by the Americans in 1918. According to the American evaluation, it was used as an attack division in the Lys offensive, in spite of its relatively low quality.
